Laboratory for Body Composition Assessment – DXA (Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry)
Coordinator: Prof. Stela Marcia Mattiello, Ph.D.
Description of Key Features: The Multi-User Laboratory for Body Composition Assessment houses a Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) device – Discovery A, Hologic – acquired through FAPESP funding. This equipment allows for body composition analysis using a compartment model, including fat mass, bone mass, and lean mass, in both humans and small animals.
DXA is considered the gold standard for body composition assessment. It performs full-body scans using extremely low radiation doses. The system generates a detailed report indicating fat, bone, and lean mass distribution across different body regions, including upper and lower limbs, trunk, and head. Additionally, it provides indices of body fat, lean mass, and estimates of visceral fat percentage in the abdominal region. The report also allows comparisons with population-based reference scores.
